I know it doesn’t matter what I say, but I am a right-wing conservative and I volunteer every week teaching English to (legal) immigrants.

Because I do. I have worked as a social worker with the poor and disabled for 6 years. I see the value in all people and don’t think anyone in America should go without while we spend billions in other countries.

I’m a (semi-retired) teacher. I tutor children who have learning disabilities and difficulty reading. I also volunteer at a literacy center where we teach adults to read. It’s very fulfilling.

What is poor in America? The welfare check recipient talking on their blue tooth as they pick up their check.

I regularly volunteer and donate to charity, along with my employer and my family I join in with sponsoring lower income families during the holiday season. This year, i will get to have extra time off of work during the holiday season and I plan on voluntering with CPS to collect, wrap and deliver presents to children.

I also regularly volunteer and give to charities that work for research of certain diseases, I have been involved with the MS Society and the Susan B. Kohmen foundation.

I will give the homeless person on the corner the last dime in my pocket as well, and if I dont have any money on me I will go buy them some food and go back and give it to them.

Just got back from 3rd trip to NOLA to work with Katrina victims…..last year, went to work in russia and romanian orphanages, currently working with ASPCA to find homes for dogs and cats…….but I agree, it is much easier to talk about a problem or our differences on that problem than it is to actually do something about the problem. You can’t fix a broke system by bit**ing about it.

hah, I’ve worked in Early Intervention programs for the past 3 years.

“Help” comes in many forms. It’s not that anyone is “pretending.” But rather people have different ideas of what “help” is.
As for me, I donate 10% of my pay to various charities. Currently, I (read “we:” wife, daughter and son) have a homeless mother and daughter living with us. Been “helping” them out for about two months now. She’s found a job and is working towards getting on her own two feet — an apartment, etc..

I know what you were getting at. I’ve asked a similar question before. The truth is, we’re all pretty pathetic to be on Y/A so much. Our employers don’t keep us busy enough, and this is something to do until we get to go home. Instead, that time could be used much more efficiently. Unfortunately, all the repubs I work for would rather us sit and fake work then let us leave early.

Well my family donates food and clothes all year round, my charitable work most often goes to supporting the troops overseas and I give money to wildlife foundations, not insane terrorist groups like PETA but actual conservationist causes like the WWF however they are starting to lose my support because of their Anthropogenic Global Warming ideology.

But the fact is generally I could give a rats azz about your average poor person. Most I have met or dealt with are not good people, they are not someone you should champion. The good-hearted bad luck poor are as common as lottery winners. They are in most part a figment of your imagination.

This is too weird. Allot of the same people who have repeatedly claimed on Y/A that the poor should take care of themselves on not count on help from anyone else also claim to help the poor. I don’t get it.

I have been there and done that. I have been homeless, and I am not in the most secure position now. I could end up back on the streets in a snap of the fingers, and I almost just was. It was only the grace of God that saved me. I am telling you this, because I want people to understand that those charities are good, but they can’t solve the core of these problems. The fact that the homeless and unfortunate even exist, is a shameful symptom of the sickness in our society. As long as we as a society, continue trying to eradicate symptoms, instead of dealing with, and healing the real cause this problem of homeless and unfortunate will never go away.
Getting the unfortunate back on their feet? What do people think that really means? The programs are ineffective because they are dealing with symptoms, and ignoring the core causes. The unfortunate individuals, are not really the problem. They are victims of a sick society. To really cure this problem, the sickness in the society as a whole, the way it runs, and the people who run it, must be addressed and healed. *sm*

We have always made DIRECT contributions to area homeless and abuse shelters (that’s as opposed to going through agencies like United Way, which eat up 12-13% in admin. costs).

We have always made contributions to area food pantries.
