Which method is correct in terms of energy savings…programmable thermostats?

I always hear that having a programmable thermostat to adjust the temps in your house for when you’re not there will save energy and lower utility bills. However, I was on the web site of a Heating and Air Conditioning company looking at their FAQ and Tips page for a different reason and one of their “tips” was that changing the temperature during the day doesn’t actually save energy because your system has to work harder to reach the “home” temperature setting. Which is correct?

A programmable thermostat will save you money. Just keep the “away” setting within 5 degrees or so of what you want the house to be when you’re home. Otherwise, the a/c may have to work too hard to catch-up and you won’t save that much.
